Google Latitude

February 4th, 2009 by cbaxter.

Google is rolling out Latitude, which is a location publishing service. Will be interesting to see how this performs across platforms. Will likely pull using contact numbers, since the Gmail contacts base is crude at best. Many companies will compete for this space and my guess is the best social network will win, since the technology is replicable but the social data is more difficult.

It would be kind of cool for figuring out where your friends are at. How cool would it be to be taking a taxi in NYC, check your phone and see your friends are in a bar just up the street, stop in and join them! Sweet

I think you can cloak your location if you do not want others to see your location, i.e.. if you are studying for an exam or on a date with someone else! Bad!

Definitely! But you don't want to share location with everyone — likely only selected lists (family, friends, coworkers). Interesting stance will be on privacy — likely it will not be big brother after all, but our own push to sharing information.
